AI Mode in Bengali: How Kolkata Businesses Can Show Up in Google's AI Answers

Yes, Google's AI Mode works in Bengali. Google announced it on 8 October 2025, along with six other Indian languages, and in March 2026 it said Search Live (voice and camera conversations in AI Mode) was available in Bengali too. For a Kolkata business, this doesn't call for special tricks. Google says no extra optimisation is needed for its AI features. What it does mean is that customers can now ask longer, more natural questions in Bengali, and the businesses with clear, accurate information (including in Bengali, where your customers use it) are in a better position to be part of the answer.

What Google announced

Two announcements on Google's India blog are relevant:

  • 8 October 2025: Google added AI Mode in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, rolling out over the following week. The post, by Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management for Search, says the aim is to let people in India ask complex questions in their preferred language, using a custom Gemini model to capture local-language nuance rather than simply translating. The same post launched Search Live in India in English and Hindi.
  • 27 March 2026: Google said Search Live in AI Mode is available in Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and more, powered by its Gemini 3.1 Flash Live model. Search Live lets people have a real-time conversation with Search using voice and their phone's camera.

A note on numbers: the October 2025 post says that, globally, people ask questions in AI Mode that are nearly three times longer than traditional searches, and that India has the largest user base for voice and visual search. Google didn't publish figures for Bengali AI Mode usage or for Kolkata, so we won't guess at them here.

What it means in practice

Picture a customer in Behala holding up their phone to a leaking pipe and asking, in Bengali, what's wrong and who can fix it nearby. Or a parent in Dum Dum typing a long Bengali question about admission dates for nearby schools. Those are the kinds of conversational, local questions AI Mode is built for.

Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out": issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. So the answer to one long question can draw on many pages and sources. Your job is to make sure your business has clear, crawlable, accurate information that answers the sub-questions your customers actually ask.

What Google says you don't need

Google's "AI features and your website" page is direct:

  • There are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
  • You don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup.

That applies whatever language your page is in. If someone offers "Bengali AI Mode optimisation" as a separate product, ask what they'd do differently from good local SEO and Bengali content. Our AI SEO guide covers the general picture.

Five practical steps for Kolkata businesses

1. Find out whether your customers search in Bengali

Don't assume. Many Kolkata customers search in English, some in Bengali and plenty in a mix of both. Look at how customers write to you on WhatsApp and in reviews, ask a few regulars, and check the search queries in Google Search Console's Performance report. If Bengali queries appear, that's a signal.

2. Add Bengali pages where they'll be used, and do it properly

If your customers use Bengali, Bengali content helps them understand you and gives Google a page in their language. Google's guidance on multilingual sites gives some clear rules:

  • Google detects language from the visible content, not from code-level lang attributes or the URL. So the page itself needs to be in Bengali.
  • Use a separate URL for each language version (for example /bn/ pages) rather than switching language with cookies or browser settings.
  • Don't automatically redirect visitors to a language version. Let them choose.
  • Use hreflang annotations to connect the English and Bengali versions of the same page.
  • Translate the content, not just the menu. Google notes that translating only boilerplate while the main content stays in another language creates a poor experience.

In our view, it's better to translate your few most important pages well (main services, prices or how to book, contact and directions) than to machine-translate the whole site and never review it. Have a fluent Bengali speaker check the wording.

3. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate

Google's AI features page specifically advises checking that your Business Profile information is up to date. For a local business this is the basics done well: correct name, category, address or service area, hours (including Durga Puja and other holiday hours), phone number, services and real photos. Google's help page says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you can't pay for a better local ranking. Our local SEO guide walks through the setup.

4. Write clear service pages that answer real questions

Long conversational questions tend to include details: area, timing, price range, a specific problem. Pages that state those details plainly are easier to use as a source. For each main service, cover:

  • what the service is and who it's for;
  • which areas of Kolkata you serve;
  • how the process works and how long it takes;
  • what affects the price, or your actual price if you publish it;
  • how to book or contact you.

Write the answer in the first few lines, then the detail. That helps human readers as much as any AI system.

5. Make sure Google can actually read your pages

Google's AI features page lists ensuring crawling is allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting setup, making content findable through internal links, providing a good page experience and keeping structured data consistent with the visible text. If your Bengali pages are only reachable through a language switcher that relies on JavaScript or cookies, or aren't linked anywhere, Google may not find them. Our technical SEO checklist covers the checks.

What not to do

  • Don't mass-produce Bengali pages with AI. Google's helpful content guidance says generating large volumes of AI text without manual oversight is considered little to no effort, and its spam policies cover scaled content abuse.
  • Don't create a copy of every page for every neighbourhood with only the area name changed. Google's spam policies describe doorway abuse as pages created to rank for specific, similar searches.
  • Don't stuff Bengali keywords into your Business Profile name or pages. Keyword stuffing is also in Google's spam policies. Use your real business name, the one on your signboard.

How to check progress

Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. It isn't shown separately. Watch impressions and clicks for your Bengali and English pages over a few months, try your customers' questions yourself in AI Mode in Bengali, and ask new customers how they found you.
